A Message from the President

Dr Maureen P. Swanney International Travel Award

It is with great pleasure that I formally announce the addition of a new award available in 2020 to financial members of ANZSRS.

The Dr Maureen P. Swanney International Travel Award was established in acknowledgement of the outstanding contributions of Maureen P. Swanney, PhD, CRFS to the field of respiratory science.

Maureen was the Scientific Director of the Respiratory Physiology Laboratory at Christchurch Hospital, New Zealand. She gave more than four decades of dedicated service to respiratory science and remained highly engaged with her work until her sudden passing in February 2019.

She was a driving force, nationally and internationally, in the development and implementation of accreditation and lung function testing standards. Her success was recognised with being awarded an ANZSRS Life Membership and TSANZ Fellowship. Most importantly she was highly dedicated to her staff and fellow society members, with unfailing mentorship, kindness, pragmatism, fairness and friendship.

Maureen was a consistent presence at international meetings to maintain the respected profile of the ANZSRS and created opportunity for young members to meet experts in the field.

It is intended that this award will allow the opportunity for members to attend international meetings, be that ERS, ATS, APSR or similar, so they can foster future positive collaborations in the field, and in the manner, Maureen exemplified.

The ANZSRS would like to formally thank MGC Diagnostics Inc. for their support of this award and their generous contribution of AUD$2500 to help cover the cost of registration, travel and/or accommodation for attendance at an international meeting. It is greatly appreciated by the entire ANZSRS.

Applications for the award will open at the at the beginning of January 2020 and close at 5:00pm AEST the Friday of the last full week of January.

Successful applications will be announced before the end of February 2020 and will be formally acknowledged at the Annual Scientific Meeting in Melbourne.

All details and guidelines will be on the ANZSRS website soon.

ANZSRS Online Applications

The ANZSRS are in the final stages of completion for online applications for all ANZSRS grants and awards, and for our prestigious CRFS examination. Allowing members to apply for these grants, via the Member Portal on the ANZSRS website, will make the process easier and more streamlined for members, and for our administration on the back end.  This will also increase the functionality of our expanding website.

ANZSRS Communications Director, Phillip Munoz, is working very hard behind the scenes with our website company to ensure all members can utilise this function seamlessly this year.

It is envisaged members will have access to online applications for CRFS before the next sitting of the exam scheduled for Friday 25th October 2019. Until the online application process is live, members can apply to sit the exam via the Member Content section of the ANZSRS website, as per the normal process.

A reminder to members who wish to sit the exam, applications will close Friday 20th September 2019.

Please keep on your email for notification of when our ANZSRS Online Applications become live!

TSANZARS 2020

I hope all members are excited to be heading back to Melbourne for the 2020 Annual Scientific Meeting. Our last meeting in Melbourne was 2008! The ANZSRS LOC are currently going above and beyond to provide one of the best ASM our society has ever seen. Thank you to LOC Joint Chairs, Brigitte Borg and Pam Liakakos, and their team, for the hard work they are putting into the program.

Our international keynote speaker, Gregg Ruppel, is sure to be a huge hit with our members. I don’t know any lab who does not own a copy of his famous book, Manual of Pulmonary Function Testing. I am sure he will be signing many, many signatures!

A reminder that a call for abstracts will open on Friday 12th July 2019, with the abstract close date being Friday 11th October 2019.

The early bird closing date for ASM registration is Friday 24th January 2020, so make sure you have paid your 2020 ANZSRS Annual Member Fee for prior to this date to take advantage of the early bird rate.

I wish all members a cosy, flu-free winter season!
