Hello Visitor,
I hope you have all been well.
Our second Queensland branch meeting for 2022 took place on Wednesday, May 11. I was very pleased that we could hold this meeting face-to-face back at our usual spot in Queensland Children’s Hospital. It was also great to see so many members attend virtually over Zoom. A big thank you to our sponsors for the evening, Vyaire, patricianly Craig and Claire who made the special trip to Brisbane.
The main presentation was given by Dr. John Mackintosh from The Prince Charles Hospital. John spoke about Interstitial Lung Disease and the challenges faced by physicians during initial diagnosis, classification, and treatment. He focused on our role as Respiratory Scientists in the ongoing care of ILD patients, particularly how lung function results guide treatment options. John has kindly provided a copy of his slides which I have attached to this email.
Alyssa Tieppo and Zoe Klibbe from Cairns Hospital presented a case study on Hamman Rich syndrome, a rare condition with a prevalence of 1-9/100,000. First described by Louis Hamman in 1935 the condition is known as acute interstitial pneumonitis and has an acute onset and rapid progression. Their case study shares the presentation of a 58-year-old gentleman from early 2017 to late last year.
Branch news for May can be viewed in the attached slides. Most noteworthy of which is Penny Jell from Logan Hospital taking on the position of Queensland branch Vice-Chair. The case of the month for May is now available on the ANZSRS website. Thank you to Jess Stewart from Mackay Base Hospital for her case on Interstitial Lung Disease in Antisynthetase syndrome.
Our next branch meeting for this year is our trivia night which is scheduled for Friday July 15. This was such a fun night last year and it would be great to see as many people there as possible. Queensland has been lucky to have a lot of new members join recently and I’d encourage you all to come along. It’s a fantastic opportunity to catch up with colleagues over some drinks, food, and trivia (not too hard, promise). I’ll also provided a Zoom link for anyone who would like to participate in the trivia virtually. I will be in touch in the coming weeks with more details.
Best wishes,
Chris
