Dear Visitor,

TSANZSRS ASM 2019 – Gold Coast

I hope everyone has recovered from another extremely successful Annual Scientific Meeting. A special thank you to Kiara Sclip and her LOC for an engaging program which resulted in many sessions being standing room only. This is evidence that respiratory physiology continues to be a priority for many in, and outside, our field. We should all be proud that our society, the ANZSRS, continues to provide this to its members and colleagues, and consistently attracts leaders from the world of respiratory physiology to our meetings. Well done Kiara, you did a fantastic job!

Congratulations to those who presented, and to all our award winners (see below). The quality of all presentations was of a very high standard and all presenters should be immensely proud of their achievements.

ANZSRS Board of Directors

Following the Annual General Meeting on the Gold Coast, there were some changes to Board positions because of the yearly Board nomination process.

Phillip Munoz (NSW) has fulfilled his 2-year term as Board Chair and President. I would like to formally thank Phil for his dedication to this prestigious position. I think you would all agree, Phil has done a tremendous job and leaves the society in a very strong position. Phil will stay on as the Director of Communications for the coming year before he vacates his position on the Board in 2020.

I would like to welcome Christine Nathan (WA) to the Board who was duly-elected to a 3-year term. We are very excited to have Christine’s experience on the Board.

Unfortunately following the AGM, Andrew Collingwood (NZ) had to retire from the Board due to personal circumstances. I would like to thank Andrew for his great work under the Professional Standards Portfolio over the past year. We wish him all the best in the future.

Because of Andrew’s retirement, the Board had the option to duly appoint a Board member to a 1-year term.  Leigh Seccombe (NSW) was re-elected at the first Board meeting following the Annual General Meeting, which was held this week. Leigh has worked tirelessly to develop the Education and Professional Activity Portfolio over the past 3-years and will continue to work within this portfolio over the next year.

ANZSRS President and Vice President

Following the AGM, I was elected by my fellow Board members as ANZSRS Board Chair and President. Danny Brazzale (VIC) was elected to the Vice-Chair position.

I am honoured and humbled to hold the position of ANZSRS President. This means a great amount to me personally and professionally. Like those who have come before me, I will continue to place the needs of our members at the forefront of everything our society does. Our members are our number one asset and without you, our society cannot continue to grow and flourish.

I, along with the rest of the ANZSRS Board, and its numerous sub-committees, will continue to develop, provide, and implement opportunities in the interest of our members.

The Board have some new, and existing, projects in development which are aimed at improving the experience of being an ANZSRS member. Let us all work together, as a society, to further strengthen our position on the world stage as a leader in respiratory physiology, measurement, education and research.

Board Member Nominations

At the 2020 AGM, 3 Board Directors will retire from office. This creates a huge opportunity for 3 members to take the next step and contribute to our great society by way of the Board. I encourage all members to consider nominating. This is an opportunity to learn new skills, learn more about the structure and function of ANZSRS, and provides an avenue for you to influence how your society will look now, and in to the future.

Talk to your colleagues who have, or currently hold, a Board position and see what opportunities exist outside of the respiratory laboratory.

In closing, I would like to thank all our members who contribute to the society in their various forms. The dedication of our members who kindly volunteer their time is greatly appreciated by all.

I wish you all safe and well-deserved Easter/ANZAC Day break!

Jarrod Warner (QLD)

ANZSRS President
